European Year of Creativity and Innovation

The goal of the European Year 2009 is to promote creativity and innovation among the general population.

EYCIIt has become a tradition for every year to be devoted to a particular theme in the European Union and for a European Year on a fundamental, cross-cutting issue to be declared.

For instance, 2007 was the Year of Equal Opportunities, while 2008 is the Year of Intercultural Dialogue. Following in-depth consultations, 2009 was proposed as the European Year of Creativity and Innovation.

Creative thinking and competent problem-solving are essential in economic, social and artistic fields. However, creativity and innovation in the arts and in the field of technology and trade are rarely well interconnected. In this context, the European Year 2009 should draw public attention to these aspects in a coherent way.

The conference to launch the European Year of Creativity and Innovation will be held on 7th January 2009 in Prague on the premises of the Senate of the Czech Republic. It is organised by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in cooperation with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic.
