Exhibition "Dances and Festivities of the 16th - 18th Centuries"

  • Date: 12.12.2008 — 15.4.2009
  • Venue: Waldstein Riding School, Prague/Czech Republic
  • Category: Exhibition

The exhibition aims to introduce the Czech public to the motif of dance and related festivals in art. From the perspective of the iconography of dance, the chosen time-frame (from late Renaissance to the end of the Baroque era) is most attractive because it showcases both the origin of the motif of dance and the development of dance in art. Dance in its myriad of types and forms is presented through a broad range of materials. The motif of dance will be showcased not only in paintings, which will form the majority of exhibited items, but also in other objects of art that frequently feature dance: glass, porcelain, fans, statuettes and graphic art, music scores, librettos, musical instruments and costumes. Dutch painters of the 17th century from the collection of the National Gallery will be showcased due to their special attention to this topic.
