Brussels to host Tripartite Social Summit
Heads of state and governments and employment ministers of the Social Troika, President of the European Commission, Commissioner for Employment and representatives of the main European social partners will meet in Brussels on 19 March.
Heads of state and governments and employment ministers of the Social Troika (Czech Republic, Sweden and Spain), President of the European Commission with the Commissioner for Employment, and the representatives of the main European social partners will hold a traditional Brussels meeting on 19 March to discuss the preparations for the Spring meeting of the European Council. Czech Presidency will be represented by Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Petr Nečas
The discussion will focus mainly on the impacts of the financial and economic crisis on employment and on the resolution of these impacts at the extraordinary EU summit on employment.
The meeting will further discuss the European Recovery Plan, which provides for two specific measures relating to employment – a revision of the Regulation on the European Social Fund and a revision of the Regulation on the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund. The suggested amendments would allow the Member States to draw funds to tackle problems related to the economic crisis more easily.
The planned Employment Summit convened by the Czech Presidency by a joint proposal with the European Commission, to be held on 7 May, will aim to focus on a coordinated approach of the Member States in mitigating the social impacts of the crisis and to lay foundations for a new consensus with the social partners mainly on the following issues: raising the competitiveness of the European Union, improving business environment, reducing administrative loan, modernising social policies and flexisecurity policies in favour of both the employee and the employer.
In the open discussion, Minister Petr Nečas will summarise the conclusions of the recent formal EPSCO Council regarding professional and geographic mobility and improved forecasting and harmonisation of the labour market needs and qualifications that should contribute to the resolution of the negative impacts of the crisis and improve the operation of the labour markets.
A press conference, to be attended by the top representatives of all the Tripartite parties, is planned from 12:30 to 13:00 in the Council building.
